The tree was first discovered in Brazil in the 16th century, and was brought to Europe in the 18th century. It was first cultivated in France, but it soon became popular throughout Europe. The string bean hoya was first brought to North America in the early 1800s, and has been growing in popularity ever since. There are now populations of the string bean hoya found in Arizona, California, Florida, New York, Texas, and other parts of North America.
